Connect. Grow. Serve. Reach out.

Weekly eNote

Dear friends:

I pray the past couple of weeks have been filled with joy and blessing as you enjoy the summer. In the midst of what is often a busy time, I hope you've had a chance to relax. The past two weeks have been all that and more for me and Lori. We returned to one of our favorite places to visit, Assateague National Seashore, camping right next to the wild ponies that roam the island (pictures above.)

Now that I've returned I am more excited than ever to head into our fall season of worship, ministry and service. We have some great plans in store, some opportunities for you to grow in faith, sermon series that we hope with inspire, heal and challenge, and worship celebrations that center us in who we are and whose we are. By the way that we live and love, grounded in the love of Christ, we ourselves become God's love letter to the world! (see 2 Corinthians 3:3) I pray that you will join me is offering our lives as a holy and living sacrifice, that we as a community might be a letter of love to our neighbors.

Here's what is happening around the Harbor:

1. Music Night: This Thursday, August 26th, 6:00 p.m. Bring a dish to share (hot dogs/burgers provided) and enjoy a music event at HUMC led by Rebecca Shaull.  We’ll have hymn singing and contemporary worship tunes and we might even read through a choir anthem together – who knows?  If you play an instrument, bring it – in fact, let Rebecca know ahead of time so she can make sure you’ll get a chance to do so. See you there! Rebecca Shaull (rlshaull@gmail.com)

2. Children's Church - begins September 12th!!: Our children's ministry is being updated as we seek to offer a time of growing in the knowledge and love of Christ for kids pre-K through grade 6. You may have heard that the children will gather for song, story and activities at the same time adults worship, 9:30 a.m.. The hope is that more families will be able to connect, grow, serve and reach out through a common time of worship. (Details coming soon on our new plans for the youth grade 7 - 12.)

3. Charge Conference - September 16th at 7:30 p.m.: Each year we gather with the District Superintendent to celebrate the previous year of ministry together. Join us for a time of worship and celebration here at the Harbor.

4. Metro Boston District Leadership Academy - September 18th: The MBH District offers one of the finest Leadership Academies in the Conference and this year the Academy features the Conference Director of Congregational Development Curtis Brown. Registration information and form will be sent as an attachment in a follow up email.

5. Odd Job List: This year as part of Service Saturday (see details below in #6), we'd like to give people the opportunity to have odd jobs around their homes completed. If you have a job you need done but need help, please let us know, things like cleaning gutters, raking, washing windows, or moving furniture. You'll find a Job Jar on the hospitality table in the fellowship hall. Obviously, whether your job is completed will depend on how many people sign up to serve on Service Saturday. Note: the job will be added to the list for September 25th only.

6. Service Saturday - September 25th from 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.: You may remember our Service Saturday from the spring, but if not, this is part of our providing you an opportunity to take the next step in service, one of our four focus areas as a community. This year we plan to offer you four different ways of serving:
a. Renovate/repairs two sets of stairs at Carolina Hill Shelter in Marshfield, MA
b. Landscape/prune hill in front of the Marshfield UMC.
c. Free dog wash (weather permitting): if you would like to be part of this team, let me or Ann White know as soon as possible - we will want to advertise this to the community.
d. Odd Job Team: work on completing the various jobs people request in the Job Jar. (see #5 above.)

Watch for Service Saturday projects on the Connection Card in the upcoming weeks during worship where you can sign up.

7. BIG SUNDAY - October 10: Last Easter was our first Big Sunday. The focus of Big Sunday is for you to invite your friends, neighbors etc to worship; the goal is to break the previous attendance record for a worship celebration. October 10 will also be the start of a new sermon series on Wisdom & Foolishness, a great reason to bring a friend. Begin now to pray about who you can invite to this exciting day! Invite, invite, invite!

8. Revive: The church restart/replant in Marshfield continues to move forward. You can keep up to date on everything that's happening by going to www.reviveumc.org. The first move into the community will be a table at the Farmer's Market each Friday afternoon. The group will be selling candy and cold drinks, but the real point of our being there is to learn! We'll be asking people to complete a survey, asking them what they think the biggest needs of the community are, and what a new church should be thinking about as they get going. This will be both a chance to learn, but also a chance to meet some people who might be interested in joining the effort! Your prayers are greatly appreciated!!!

Grace and peace
